Description: Inspired by the words and wisdom of the inspirational Maya Angelou. Many of us knew Maya’s words way before we came to know much about her. My sister used to read her books when we were teenagers. I wasn’t much of a reader then, she was the bookworm and I was the artist. I distinctly remember seeing the title of one of her books “I know when the caged bird sings” and noticing her name - thinking to myself “ Maya, what a pretty name”. Years later in my adults years, I heard her poem “Still I Rise” in the form of a house music track by a UK soulful house singer - Peyton. Oh, how I fell in love with that song! I wanted to learn the lyrics (at that point, I had no idea that it was Maya’s Poem - how could I? I was busy clubbing!)
Years on, that poem has stayed with me, the words are so powerful, whenever I’ve gotten over some dark times in my life, I’ve always thought back to the poem and so it inspired this piece of original abstract art work.
