Description: Birds are a symbol of freedom but decades after slavery and with modern slavery very much alive, just how free is Africa?
In the 1970’s Africa’s output accounted for 79% of the worlds gold production. Today, Africa does not feature in the top 10 of countries with the largest gold reserves despite being the largest producer of the previous metal.
Mining of gold is still prevalent in Africa but quickly smuggled out of the country, allot of the time, tax free by foreign controlled criminal syndicates. The UAE is said to have imported over $15 Billion worth of gold from Africa in 2016 much of which is illegally traded, passing from miners to middlemen and eventually out of the country in hand luggage on planes with no taxes paid the state.
Since 2016, Ghana, has been concerned that a rush of mainly Chinese-led gold mining ventures is harming the gold economy and the environment.
Gold features heavily in my works which feature Africa. When I think of Africa, I think of jaw dropping creatures like this beautiful African Roller Bird and I think of rich natural resources such as diamonds, gold and oil.
I hope for Africa to continue seeing its value to the world, its time to fully release its self of the ongoing oppression and stand firm as a player at the global economic and environmental table.
